September/October is my fave time to go to the States, and now is the time to book. Cheap flights, the US kids are back in school (shorter lines) the airports are less crazy and the weather is usually chilly but clear. Hotels and car rentals are cheaper, and sometimes you'll even get to see the autumn leaves turning, which is breathtaking.
